Trapdoor Poetry to Feature Randolph Maxted

Trap Door Poetry
is pleased to present
Randolph Maxted
Sunday, January 13
6 - Open Mic
6:30 - Guest Reader

Born and raised in Canada, Randolph has lived in California almost half his life.  He is a dual citizen and lives in Palm Springs.  He studied theatre and English literature at Montreal’s McGill University, and has been writing poetry for 30 years.  He was involved in the literary scenes in Vancouver and Santa Barbara before moving here.  In Vancouver, he wrote and directed several plays, and both there and since coming to the States has had pieces published in several literary magazines.  In Santa Barbara, he did readings of his work on community cable television, in addition to being involved in numerous solo and group readings.  Since arriving in Palm Springs, Randolph has been involved with the Desert Pride Community Center, where he twice co-produced the art auction benefit, “Tasty Plateful”.  He has published four chapbooks, and plans to release another collection of poetry in 2008, as well as a memoir.  Randolph publishes and co-edits(with Lee Balan) “The Intriguist”, a grassroots literary journal, which will put out its fifth issue shortly.  He says, “I think it is of utmost importance that we writers and artists support each other, partly because there is a much larger segment of the general population than us that will not support us.  Our common goal is to share and foster thought and creativity, and always to make it fun and empowering to do so. ”

Rancho Mirage Library Features Barones

“LET’S FACE IT”
Larger-than-life
Hyper-realistic cutout wood portraits
By Karen & Tony Barone

Rancho Mirage Library Exhibition
December 2007 through March 2008

The portraits in this exhibition were executed mostly in 2002. In these works the Barones have paid a return visit to classical portraiture using elements of Italian Renaissance drawing. Using variations of sienna and umber the Barones have created large- scale photo-realistic portraits of the head and face only. Because the Barones consider themselves primarily sculptors, they uniquely execute the portraits on one-inch thick maple veneered wood using the natural wood grain and coloration as the medium ground.

The Barones describe this photorealism style of portraiture as “…not portraits of the subject, but rather portraits of a photograph of the subject.” Keeping one foot in the “artist as craftsman” tradition of 15th century Europe, the Barones carve away the silhouette, freeing the subject from its rigid rectilinear material. The unique combination of materials and hyper-realist execution allows them to gently and carefully place the other foot solidly in the contemporary art world.

Photo Opening In Conjunction With Film Festival

P E R S P E C T I V E S
Photo Open Featuring:
STEVEN ARNOLD
SUNNY McNAIR
JANUARY 12TH – FEBRUARY 9TH 2008
JANSSENARTSPACE

Perspectives

In conjunction with the Palm Springs Film Festival
Janssenartspace is proud to present the photographic work
of Steven Arnold and Sunny McNair in PERSPECTIVES, an exhibit where two
levels of existences, meet at a common plane.
Opening Reception will be held on January 12th 2008 6-9pm.

Regrettably, Steven Arnold passed away in 1994. His photographs can be seen
in several museums worldwide, including Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Private collections include Salvador Dali, Cher, Goldie Hawn, Lauren Hutton,
Yves. St. Laurent and many others. Born in Berkeley, California, Steven’s black
and white photographs are staged eroticism. He uses dramatic lighting, much
like we see in old film noir movies. Arnold uses a mixture of “pleasure-dome,
prop-house wonderland.” Inspired by friend Salvador Dali, the staged photograph
was a perfect opportunity for Steven Arnold to avoid the compromises one was
forced to make in commercial filmmaking. One of Steven’s models and friend,
Brett Kester, has accumulated several original, signed photographs of the
artist known as Steven Arnold, which will be exhibited at Janssenartspace
through February 9th.

On the other side of the spiritual universe we have Sunny McNair in her
first gallery exhibit. At a young age, she began with sketching, painting and
now photography. The technique behind her “morphography” was discovered
by accident, but she has since made some very purposeful contributions to the
world of monochromatic photography. The misshapen faces reflect her eccentric
upbringing, in all its many facets. In her work, she attempts to capture those
fleeting moments where a plane of existence is out of whack, where we cannot
decide between one or the other, where we love and hate at the same time,
and where our greatest discoveries are made. Gathering inspiration from the
wonderful randomness of it all, she takes picture after picture, looking for
the next rhapsody of expression.
